Renata Mirkova

  Hello, I am Renata Mirkova!

I am from the Czech Republic with the Chinese name Xiao Mi. I'm a vegan "foodie", a big fan of baked sweets, and obsessed with hardcore, punk, reggae and DUB music. My first visit to Chengdu was in 2012, and now I am pursuing a postgraduate degree in the Department of Chinese International Education of Sichuan University.

Though I have never learned how to play any musical instrument, I've always been a big fan of music and enjoy watching varied musical performances every now and again. During my childhood in the Czech Republic, my first encounter with music was in a punk live show. As I grew up, other types of music gradually grew on me as well, but my favorite remains to be hardcore punk music. People who came to the show seem to belong to a same and united community. And for big events, I will always go to summer music festivals, reggae shows and Dub parties for the enjoyment of music.

  Dance to the Music

I came to Chengdu in 2012 with almost little knowledge about the city. At that time, I only heard that there were many punk and rock music shows in Beijing and Wuhan. I searched on Internet for my bar options in Chengdu. I was worried at first till I alighted on the name of "Little Bar", a place I had to check out. Soon in September that year, I stepped into the Little Bar for the first time, along with my friends, to see a gig of "Mr. Sea Turtle".

We were late since we got lost on the way, and the show already kicked off. A huge crowd was dancing around the stage to the loud music, as if the bar was a boiling pot. People were so excited and fired up in this burning room. However, later to my surprise, the crowd broke up and left just minutes after the gig was over. Why didn't they stay around for a little while longer to have some chats over drinks? My friends and I were still excited about the performance and wanted to hang out more to meet other music fans in Chengdu, as was the usual drill back in the Czech Republic. It later dawned on me that they do share insights with their friends - just not some strangers from a bar even they share the same music tastes with - while eating hot pot. Even today I still do not quite understand why. Because from my take, people who fancy the same underground (or alternative) music should be able to create some kind of scene.

Heaven above and Flower Town below

On April 20, 2013, an earthquake occurred in Ya'an, a city not far from Chengdu. Despite of the tragedy, Chengdu citizens remain optimistic and enjoy music or a pleasant outing in warm spring days. One afternoon, a friend of mine took me to a music festival called Spring Outing in the Flower Town (Sanshenghua Town). After several twists and turns on the road, I felt tired and thirsty and wondered if this "Spring Outing" was worth all the trouble. All of a sudden, I heard music a bit like the sound of bees of a busy hive, which came closer and closer as we moved forward.

The music led us to our destination, a pub called Good Morning. It is situated in a touristy street, beside a small fair of ornaments, clothes, etc. We walked through a wooden door into a small yard, and saw a girl in a pink one-piece was dancing in front of the DJ. I would have joined her if it wasn't for a dry mouth. So I went straight to the larger back yard where the bar counter and main stage were. Some band was performing on stage. I ordered a beer and drank up, and ordered another. Time went by fast, and as the night fell, more people joined us. Varied performances went on and on. But those struck me most were two bands - Hi Person and The Trouble.

The music of Hi Person was unique. Its female lead had a very attractive, strong but gentle voice, and together with the band it created a unique rock style. Their music, obviously an outcome of mixed music genres, was quite alternative. Once The Trouble got on stage, they immediately started hyping up the audience, making some bobbing heads and some dancing on the floor. I began to dance, as well, and enjoyed myself to the full. So when the band stepped off the stage, I quickly approached them to offer my appreciation. And afterwards, I sat down with the bass player Uncle Ran to chat and drink. And through music, we became friends that night. If I hadn't met him that day, I would not know my current 99% friends in Chengdu, and the chances are I had been long gone from the city. Unfortunately, The Trouble didn't last long and broke up later. However, the Spring Outing, as Chengdu's own DIY music festival, is held every early April in the Flower Town.

So far, numerous live houses have sprung up in Chengdu. And my favorite ones are Littler Bar and Good Morning. Besides, I am also a frequent patron of the riverside Jah Bar and Steam Bar near Wuhou Shrine Museum. These two usually house small events, reminding me of the places I frequented visited back in my hometown. Although punk music live shows are not many in Chengdu, my yearning for music can still be satisfied here. And trust me, everyone can find their favorite music and live house in the city.
